Dear RVS Community members:

Rockaway Valley School to Celebrate “Green Day 2018”

The Rockaway Valley School Green Team in conjunction with the Boonton Township Green Team is following up on last year’s successful efforts to live a “greener,” healthier lifestyle by instituting a whole day of awareness and learning more deeply about the components that make a healthy life.

On Friday, May 25, students will have the opportunity to work through a variety of stations that will cover a gamut of opportunities to expand their understanding of what it means to “go green.”  From familiar topics like recycling to new information like how important it is to protect the bat population to combat the mosquitos that cause health issues, our students will benefit from the expertise of members of the community who are committed to furthering understanding of these issues.  Some of the other topics to be covered include learning about the importance of pollinators in our gardens, how to identify and stay away from poison ivy, a nature walk to observe native plants on school property, using a variety of materials in the school’s makerpace to create something new from something old, they will also build on nutrition concepts the entire school adopted last year (slow, go, whoa) to check to see if they are making the best choices possible and cultivating healthy eating habits.  They will begin the day with a brief yoga session to start the day in the most receptive way possible.

Committing to a “going green” encompasses much more than one might think.  The RVS Green Day is one way we will help set the stage for the lifelong good habit of learning to make healthy choices:  how to dispose of refuse, how to create nutritious menus to fuel a healthy life, how to protect the environment around us so our communities are healthy, how to reduce and reuse and most importantly, how to imagine a future where these good choices are second nature, insuring healthy and fulfilling lives for all.
