Greetings from Falcon Country!  It has been a busy and exciting first half of the school year at the Rockaway Valley School.  Students remain engaged and active in all that our school has to offer both academically and in their extra-curricular activities.

We are proud to continue our commitment to preparing our students for being responsible and innovative members of the digital age as they are exposed to valuable information related to 21 st  century learning skills.  Our RVS Makerspace was unveiled earlier this year and serves as a space where students can create, explore and invent in a classroom where process is more important than the outcome!  Our teachers continue to embed STEAM-related activities in their regular classrooms at every grade level and across multiple disciplines. Our Falcons and Fledglings program saw our grade 7 and 8 students working with their primary grade peers to help them create various STEAM projects that centered around both Halloween and Thanksgiving.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our student leaders to peer-coach our future big Falcons!

One of the greatest challenges facing our students today is in helping them to balance the expectations associated with being a student, student-athlete, digital learner, and community member.  I am pleased that RVS offers both students and staff opportunity to practice and refine these skills by partnering with the United Way to offer students coping skills courses that focus on time management and a positive growth mindset. We also offer assemblies through our Home and School Association to focus on character education and our presenter, Chris Poulus, a BMX stunt rider, was one such remarkable assembly!

Our PARCC scores continue to impress and not only meet state expectations, but exceed them! This is a testament to the hard work of our staff and students and the support we receive from parents in reinforcing concepts taught at school, at home with their children.  We are proud of our Girls Soccer Team on bringing home their second county championship in three years!  Congratulations!  Our Service Squad spent considerable time collecting necessities and treats for military personnel serving overseas and veterans of the armed forces distributed through Rolling Thunder. This is a testament to the willingness of our students to recognize the importance of community outreach.  This sentiment resonates throughout our school as our Green Team students maintain our vegetable garden and distribute much of the harvest to those in need in our community to our local food pantry.

Parents/guardians should check their accounts on the Honeywell notification system to make sure phone numbers are up to date and that we’re calling, texting and emailing you in all the correct places.  Instructions for updating your Honeywell are on the website under Announcements.

With Falcon Pride,

Dear RVS Community members:

As I am sure you are all aware, earlier in the week the school community of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida, suffered a terrible tragedy when a former student opened fire on students and staff, killing 17 and wounding many others.  After terrible events like this, our first reaction is grief and sadness but after the initial shock, we may wonder Could this happen at my school?

While our thoughts and prayers are with the affected community in Florida at this time, I want to reach out to you to let you know that we remain vigilant in our commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment for our students and staff at RVS.  As an educator, I appreciate just how important it is to feel that the school does all that it can to keep my children safe.  Unfortunately, we are faced with the harsh reality that school shootings are all too common and more often than not, they are perpetrated by an individual that has a connection to the school.

Please be reassured that we have plans in place and we conduct drills as best we can, realizing at the same time that it may be impossible to plan for every eventuality.  We constantly assess and revise our emergency plans and seek out the best advice available to us.  Dr. Lendis and I attend workshops and keep up to date on the most current practices and protocols available.  We are in close contact with the Boonton Township Police who provide a consistent presence on our campus and are our partners in planning and drilling for emergency situations.

We appreciate your adhering to our safety protocols during the school day and at after-school extracurricular events.  It is gratifying to have your support and we are fortunate to be a part of such a caring community.  If you would like to review our building access regulations, you will find them on our website
( www.rvsnj.org ) under the “For Parents” tab.

I know we are all heartsick at yet another cruel tragedy in a school.  Know that we will do everything in our   power to keep our students and staff safe.
